Chennai Super Kings: Two Key Players Down

CSK were already under pressure when their injury news hit. Losing Khaleel Ahmed and Ayush Mhatre in the same week made a hard situation harder.

Khaleel Ahmed (Quadriceps Tear)

Khaleel was CSK’s go-to left-arm pacer. He appeared in five matches this season, taking two wickets at an economy of 8.67.

During the game against KKR on April 14, he suffered a quadriceps tear and was later confirmed out for the season.

CSK has not named a replacement.

Ayush Mhatre (Hamstring Tear)

Mhatre had been CSK’s best batter by a distance. His 201 runs included two half-centuries, and he looked the most assured player in their lineup.

That ended on April 18 against SRH, when a hamstring tear while batting ruled him out for 6 to 12 weeks.

He won’t play again in IPL 2026. No replacement has been announced.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: A Pace Department Under Strain

SRH entered IPL 2026 with a strong overseas pace plan. It didn’t survive contact with the season.

Brydon Carse (Hand Injury)

Carse picked up a hand injury in the nets before SRH played a single match. He was ruled out without featuring in the tournament. Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka came in as his replacement.

David Payne (Ankle Injury)

Payne was already a replacement himself, having been signed after Jack Edwards was ruled out pre-season.

He played two games, took two wickets, but conceded at 14.0 per over. An ankle injury then cut short his time in IPL 2026.

South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee was named as his replacement. Coetzee is a more experienced option and a genuine upgrade on paper.

Gujarat Titans: One Exit, Minimal Disruption

Tom Banton (Finger Injury)

Banton was in the GT squad but never played a match. A finger injury ruled him out before he had a chance, and he has since been ruled out for the tournament.

GT signed South African wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen to replace him. Because Banton hadn’t featured, the switch hasn’t disrupted GT’s plans in any obvious way.

Which Teams Are Most Affected?

The picture is quite different across the three sides.

  • CSK are genuinely stretched. Two starters gone, no replacements named, and a run of results they need to reverse. Of all the teams on this list, they have the most to figure out.
  • SRH has managed well. Coetzee arriving in place of Payne could actually strengthen their attack. The Carse exit stung before the tournament, but Madushanka has T20 experience to offer.
  • GT has absorbed its change without any visible impact. Banton’s zero appearances meant Esterhuizen walks into an open role rather than a defined one.
