Mumbai Indians didn’t build their record overnight.
They lost the finals. They had seasons where nothing clicked. In 2022 and 2024, they finished last.
And yet, when you line up every IPL franchise by trophies, MI sit alone at the top with five titles — two more than anyone else.
Mumbai Indians IPL History

Understanding the Mumbai Indians’ IPL history means understanding how a franchise learns, adapts, and still produces its best cricket when the stakes are highest. That’s the story here.
The Foundation: Ownership, Identity and the Early Seasons
Mumbai Indians were launched in 2008 as one of eight original IPL franchises.
Reliance Industries holds the franchise, with Nita Ambani as owner — the most prominent owner-figure in the IPL’s first decade and beyond.
The team plays at the Wankhede Stadium in south Mumbai. Low boundaries, a fast outfield, and a passionate crowd have made it one of the most batting-friendly and high-scoring venues in the IPL.
Their opening XI in 2008 included Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, and Shaun Pollock alongside Sanath Jayasuriya, who scored MI’s first-ever IPL century that season.
Sachin Tendulkar was the Icon Player — a designated status for elite Indian cricketers in the first two seasons.
2008: 5th place. 2009: 7th. 2010: runners-up — Sachin won the Orange Cap with 618 runs, but MI lost the final. 2011: Rohit Sharma joined. 2012: still no title.
They were good. They just weren’t ready.

Mumbai Indians IPL Titles: All Five, Season by Season
2013 — Rohit Takes Over, MI Take the Trophy
The 2013 season belongs to Rohit Sharma. Ricky Ponting stepped down mid-season, dropped himself, and handed the captaincy to Rohit. The results were immediate.
MI beat CSK in the final. Harbhajan Singh was their best bowler, finishing with 24 wickets.
And a young fast bowler making his debut — Jasprit Bumrah — dismissed Virat Kohli on his first appearance. The Bumrah era had begun.
MI also won the Champions League T20 that year. Their first season with Rohit as captain ended with two trophies.
2015 — Ten Games, Nine Wins
MI came alive late. They won nine of their final ten games to claim the trophy.
Lasith Malinga ran through the opposition all season — 24 wickets in total. Lendl Simmons batted MI to safety repeatedly, finishing as the top scorer with 540 runs.
And Hardik Pandya arrived. His debut knock — 61 off 31 balls against KKR — was the kind of entrance that sends ripples through a tournament.
2017 — History Written in the Last Over
Three IPL titles. No one had done it before.
MI got there by defending 10 runs off the final over against Rising Pune Supergiant.
Mitchell Johnson held his nerve. One of the most dramatic endings the tournament has produced.
Bumrah was exceptional all season — his 3/7 against KKR in the qualifier was as good as fast bowling gets in T20 cricket.
He finished with 20 wickets. MI posted 223/6 against KXIP — their highest total at that point.

2019 — The Narrowest Final in IPL History
One run. That’s how MI beat CSK in 2019 — their fourth title.
Before the final, Alzarri Joseph had taken 6/12 on his IPL debut against SRH — the best figures by any debutant in IPL history.
Quinton de Kock put together a 529-run season and made 15 dismissals behind the stumps — a first for any wicketkeeper in a single IPL campaign. MI became the first team to win 100 IPL matches this season.
2020 — A Fifth Title in an Empty Stadium
The IPL moved to the UAE. No crowds, different pitches, shorter boundaries. MI adapted better than anyone.
Ishan Kishan batted brilliantly throughout — 516 runs across the campaign.
Bumrah was at his absolute best, finishing with 27 wickets.
MI became the first franchise to play 200 IPL matches and left the UAE as five-time champions.
Back-to-back titles. The only team in IPL history to manage it.

The Players Behind the Trophies
- Sachin Tendulkar brought credibility and a fan base. He never won an IPL title, playing his last MI match in the 2013 final — the one MI won. The irony isn’t lost on anyone.
- Lasith Malinga spent a decade as MI’s most lethal weapon. His 28 wickets in 2011 won him the CLT20’s Man of the Tournament award. He returned as a Bowling Mentor in 2018 before coming back as a player in 2019. The full MI vs Malinga chapter is one of the great franchise loyalty stories.
- Kieron Pollard hit over 200 sixes for MI before anyone else managed half that. He stayed 13 seasons and went on to lead MI Emirates in the ILT20. He chose MI. Repeatedly.
- Jasprit Bumrah has been the spine of MI’s attack since 2013. Two back-to-back title campaigns. A personal best of 5/10. An economy of 6.48 across 20 wickets in a tough 2024 season. He’s the best T20 fast bowler MI has ever had, and probably the best in the world.
- Hardik Pandya burst in as a teenager and became one of cricket’s most complete all-rounders. He left to win back-to-back titles with the Gujarat Titans. He came back in 2024. It’s complicated, but his talent has never been the question.
- Suryakumar Yadav is the final piece. 717 runs in 2025. MVP. The best T20 batter operating right now — and he belongs to MI.
The MI vs CSK Equation
No two IPL franchises have clashed in more finals than MI and CSK. Three times. MI won all three.
The full picture — win rates, close finishes, head-to-head stats — is in our MI vs CSK head to head record.
The 2019 final, won by one run, is the headline. But there are dozens of regular-season clashes that have gone right to the wire, too.
Current MI Squad: Where MI Are in 2026
The current MI IPL squad centres on Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Tilak Varma.
Varma is the most exciting young talent in the squad — a left-hander with a wide range of shots and the temperament to match.
MI have also expanded globally: WPL (Mumbai Indians women), SA20 (MI Cape Town), ILT20 (MI Emirates), MLC (MI New York), The Hundred (Oval Invincibles). No other IPL franchise has built at this scale.
The way MI have assembled this squad over the years — retaining the right players, making bold buys — is best understood through the history of the IPL auction.
FAQs
- Q: How did the Mumbai Indians become the most successful IPL team?
MI won by combining smart squad management with the right captain at the right time. Rohit Sharma took over in 2013 and led them to five titles over eight seasons. Their scouting of players like Bumrah and Pandya was critical.
- Q: Which Mumbai Indians player has the most IPL centuries?
Rohit Sharma has scored the most centuries for MI, and holds the record for the most IPL centuries overall. His consistency at the top of the order across 14+ seasons is unmatched.
- Q: Did Sachin Tendulkar win an IPL title with MI?
No. Sachin played his final IPL match in the 2013 final — the season MI won their first title. He retired shortly after but was not a player in the title-winning XI that day.
- Q: Who is the best bowler in MI history?
Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga are level on wickets, both around 170. Bumrah edges it on longevity and impact in title seasons — his 27 wickets in 2020 were the best of any bowler in that tournament.
- Q: How many players from MI’s 2013 title squad are still playing IPL cricket?
Of the 2013 core, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah are still active in the IPL as of 2026. Bumrah was a late entrant to that campaign rather than a starter, but has been central to MI ever since.
Wrapping It Up
Mumbai Indians are the IPL’s measuring stick. Five titles, two back-to-back runs, the best bowling debut in tournament history, and a captain who led a franchise for over a decade.
They’ve also shown that losing seasons don’t define you. The culture is there. The players are there. And the trophies are proof that it works.
